What is a GFCI outlet?
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters or GFI's are designed to cut off power flow before an electric shock can affect your heartbeat. These outlets help protect you from electrical hazards by monitoring the amount of electricity flowing in a circuit. The moment the outlet detects an imbalance in the flow of electricity or a ground fault situation, the GFCI cuts off power to the outlet.
Why wont my GFCI outlet reset?
GFCI outlets may not reset if there is a ground fault situation within the circuit that has not been resolved. Some equipment and appliances can cause them to trip. Typically if you unplug everything from all the outlets that are being protected and it still doesn't reset, further troubleshooting is required.
Should I change my outlets and switches on my own?
While a job such as changing your own outlet or switch may seem easy. It can be a fire hazard if not installed correctly making the installation dangerous. Not using the correct wiring methods with multiple wires used to complete the branch circuit, its possible you might have issues later.
Why does my switch make a sparking noise when I turn it on?
This is usually caused by loose wires connected to the switch or loose or worn components inside the switch. If repairing the loose connections doesn't resolve the problem, a new switch should be installed.
What should I do if my electrical panel is making noises or sparking?
Only a qualified electrician should troubleshoot the exact cause and make the necessary repairs. If you have an idea what breaker is causing the problem, turn if off immediately. At the very least, it's a good idea to use as little electricity as possible until it can be resolved.
How do i reset my circuit breaker?
First turn the breaker to the "off" position. Second, with your hand on the breaker, stand to the side and away from the panel and turn to the "on" position. If the breaker trips again, the problem needs to be resolve by a professional.
Is it possible to provide maintenance to my existing electrical panel or do i need to have it replaced?
Adams Electrical Services can maintain and repair older panels. We only recommend replacing your panel if your out of breaker spaces or if it is absolutely necessary to prevent a safety hazard.
I need some additional circuits installed but do not have any circuit breaker spaces left?
Depending on the age and type of electrical panel you have, it may be a good idea to replaced it with a larger panel. In some cases it is a better option to just have a sub-panel installed.
Can i do my own electrical wiring?
Some aspects of electrical wiring can be complicated which may present you with a safety risk and the possibility of wiring something incorrectly causing additional problems.
I have aluminum wiring in my house, is aluminum wiring safe and do i need to have it replaced?
If the branch circuits in your house are installed with aluminum conductors, it is recommended to have the house rewired but it can be very costly to have the house rewired.
A second option is to have aluminum to copper wire nuts with copper pigtails installed. It is very important to have a professional handle this job, as aluminum is very brittle and if not installed efficiently will result in a fire hazard.
